Fixes for Common Door Problems

Have you ever had problems with the opening and closing of your doors? This is one of the most common problems that a door has. In fact, almost everyone has experienced this issue at least once in their lifetime, especially if they have wooden doors. The good news is, you don’t always need to call in the professionals to handle these common door problems, although this would be advisable. After all, you don’t want to damage your door or compound the problem. However, there are some simple fixes that can be managed at home, such as:

1 – Hinges

Most people assume that hinges will last for a long time. However, they forget that hinges move every time the door is opened or closed. Hinges are also made of metal and have the same vulnerabilities. If your door isn’t closing or opening properly, it’s time to have a look at the problem. You’ll find that the door will become imbalanced if even a single screw in the door comes loose.

You can fix these problems by tightening the screws. If that doesn’t help, the mortise is too deep and needs to be adjusted. You can do that by slipping a wood shim under the hinge plate.

2 – The Latch

The second most common cause of door problems is the latch. If your door opens even when it’s closed or if it starts rubbing against the latch, you need to fix the problem. Again, tightening the screws might help. However, if that doesn’t help, you need to remove the screws and move the latch to a better position. You should then carefully test the latch fitting before screwing it in place.

3 – Improper Fit

Doors are commonly made of wood. This can cause you problems as the wood can swell during different temperatures if it’s not sealed properly. You can check the fit of the door by looking at the gap between the door and the frame. It should be pretty even with the bottom of the door straight.

The wood shouldn’t brush against the door. If you find that the gap in uneven and the door is rubbing against the frame or the floor, you need to sand those areas but this is only a temporary fix. You might need to replace the door entirely if the problem isn’t resolved.
