A Simple Checklist for Home Renovations

Home renovations can get costly and out of hand quickly. People tend to lose track of their project, the budget, and sometimes even the design. That’s why it’s important to be organized and make sure that you plan everything at the very beginning. Here’s a small checklist that we at Gordmay Construction have put together to help you get the through the home renovation project smoothly.

Step 1 – Make a List of Your Needs

The first thing you need to do is make a list of what you need. You should organize this list in order of priorities. For example, if your kitchen is in desperate need of repair, it should be on the top of your list. But adding an office room that you would only use occasionally should be at the bottom of this list. This will help you when you start working on your renovation plan and budget. The renovations at the bottom of the list will be something that you may need to sacrifice if your timeline and budget don’t go according to the plan.

Step 2 – Plan a Budget

It’s vital to determine the budget before you meet the contractor or start on the project. You should always choose a budget that you’re financially comfortable with. It’s not a good idea to spend more than what you can afford. When you’re planning out your budget, keep a buffer between the amount you intend to spend and the amount you can spend. For example, if you can spend $40,000 on your home renovation, have a buffer of about 10% to 20%. Your budget would be $32,000 to $36,000 with about $8000 to $4000 for unexpected or additional expenses. A professional contractor can also help you plan out your budget and align the renovation up to meet your goals.

Step 3 – Find and Hire a Contractor

Once you’ve decided on your budget, it’s time to hire a professional contractor. In order to find a great contractor:

• Ask your friends, neighbors, and acquaintances for recommendations
• Research online, on social media, check out reviews
• Get quotes from multiple contractors
• Interview them carefully

After you’ve decided which contractor you want to hire, decide what time is ideal for your renovation to take place. Home renovations take time and can disrupt your life. It’s a good idea to pick a time of the year when you won’t be super busy.
